Gold Double laced Barnevelder / Blue laced Barnevelder

The Barnevelder is a medium heavy breed of chicken named after the Dutch town of Barneveld.

We carry the Double – laced variety of Barnevelder but this year we will also be able to supply Blue laced Barnevelders.

The girls we carry are laying consistently well and giving us a good number of eggs making them one of our best layers.

We have found them to be very hardy birds and good foragers as well as being a quiet, easy chook breed to have around that has a high immunity to pests and disease.

The Gold double-lacing is stunning on the body with a black neck making this breed highly desirable.

A fantastic medium-heavy breed that is classed Non- Broody. We do find we have the odd girls that like to brood in the height of summer and they can be excellent mothers.

Lays 250 + Eggs per year.

Orpingtons – Black, Blue and Splash

Black Orpingtons

Black Orpingtons

The original Black Orpington was bred by William Cook in 1886 by crossing Minorcas, Langshans and Plymouth Rocks to create a new hybrid bird. Cook selected a black bird that would exhibit well by hiding the dirt and soot of London.

When the breed was shown in Madison Square Gardens in 1895, its popularity soared.

Lay approx 200 – 250 medium to large light-brown eggs a year.

A fantastic chook to have around when a good old Canterbury ‘Nor-wester’ arrives! Plenty of feathers they do have… Great cold resistant birds.

A must for every flock, the Orpingtons are the grand ladies of the coop – their very docile temperament make them great for any situation especially for children.

The chickens are very large, very docile and make great mothers. All of these qualities make them perfect backyard chickens.

Due to their size, they do take the longest to reach Point of Lay. This can be around 35-40 weeks of age.

Lavender Araucana

The current worldwide Araucana Standard (except North America) indicates a medium- to large-sized chicken with a tail that lays bluish-green eggs.

Our NZ birds tend to be Light to medium size. We select for temperament and a good sized bird for our breeding pens.

Specific features are a small feathery crest, beards, very small pea comb and a complete absence of wattles.

The lavenders are a very popular colour and look quite stunning foraging out on the green grass.

Lays 200-250 blue/green eggs per year. Our girls are proven excellent layers!

Black and Blue Cuckoo Orpington x Ancona

This year we are breeding a purpose bred cross for the second year.

The parent birds are as follows:

Cockerel: Lavender Cuckoo Orpington – purebred.

Pullets: Half Ancona / Half Orpington

The resulting cross will result in a great laying bird that is either Blue cuckoo or Black Cuckoo colouring. They will be 3/4 Orpington : 1/4 Ancona.

The Ancona breed are a designated laying breed similar to the leghorns – this has been introduced to increase egg laying potential. The Orpingtons supply good egg laying ability, temperament and feathers to cope with cold climates. Both breeds used lay a good sized egg and hybrid hardiness will ensure this is a beaut bird to have in your flock.
