A tray is a good idea when you have a confined space to feed your hens treats or wheat.

* Wheat is a great idea at night as the gizzard grinds away on the grains creating heat which helps keep your hens warm. It is also a good boost of protein over and above of the poultry pellets/mash.

The tray serves to reduce the worm egg ingestion which can occur when your hens are rapidly scoffing treats or food that is thrown on the dirt or contaminated ground. It also helps to crowd the hens during the eating episode which helps keep out sparrows etc from stealing food.
